Available in both D1 & D2 technology, these globes require a ballast to operate. The older D2 technology has the igniter built into the ballast, while the new D1 globes have the igniter built into the back of the globe. This allows the ballast to be smaller and eliminates the need for the large current to pass from the ballast to the globe. The most significant advantage is the faster ignition and warm up period when compared to the D2 technology.
